Family Movie Night: The Addams Family

They're Creepy and They're Kooky! 🖤

We love The Addams Family! We even dressed up as them for Halloween a couple of years ago (check out the picture!). So, a movie night featuring this mysterious and spooky family was only fitting.

As an avid Addams Family fan, I've watched all the versions and love them all (although Addams Family Values will always be my favorite). Erik, however, hadn't seen the 2019 animated version, so we decided it was the perfect pick for our movie night!

Of course, we had to include some of our favorite family members in the menu. As a kid, Wednesday and Thing were my favorites, and honestly, they still are! So today, we're making Thing Hand Pies. They're spooky, fun, and the perfect treat to enjoy while watching the Addams family do what they do best.

Now, if you look closely at my picture, you'll notice that I didn't exactly seal the edges of my hand pies. Whoops! 😂 But here's the thing: at Things Made From Scratch, we're all about enjoying the process of creating memories with your family, not chasing perfection. So instead of pretending these pies came out flawless, I'm sharing them just as they are.

And the best part? Even if your hand pies don't look perfect, they'll still taste delicious! That's a win in my book.

Make sure to seal the edges for a cleaner finish!

Bring a little spooky fun to your next movie night with these Thing Hand Pies! Inspired by The Addams Family, these flaky puff pastry treats can be filled with your favorite sweet fillings, from Nutella to fruit preserves. They're easy to make, fun for the whole family, and a reminder that creating memories is always sweeter than chasing perfection!

Ingredients

  • 1 package puff pastry (2 sheets)

  • Your favorite filling, such as Nutella, fruit preserves, or cinnamon butter

  • 1 egg + 1 tablespoon water, whisked together for the egg wash

Instructions

  1. If using frozen puff pastry, thaw according to the package instructions.

  2. Preheat your oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  3. Place the thawed but still-cold puff pastry on a lightly floured surface.

  4. Trace your hand or use a hand-shaped cookie cutter to cut out hand shapes. You'll need two shapes for each pie. You can make them as big or small as you’d like.

  5. Spread a small amount of your favorite filling onto one hand shape, leaving a little space around the edges.

  6. Place a second hand shape on top and gently press around the edges. Use a fork to seal them together.

  7. Transfer the hand pies to your prepared baking sheet and brush the tops with egg wash.

  8. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.

  9. Let cool slightly before serving, then enjoy your spooky treats during your Addams Family movie night!

A little tip: Keep your puff pastry cold while working with it, and don't overfill your hand pies. This will help them hold their shape and keep the filling from escaping while baking.

Storage: Store your Thing Hand Pies in an airtight container at room temperature for 2–3 days or in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. To reheat, pop them in the microwave for a few seconds or warm them in the air fryer until heated through. For the best flaky texture, I recommend the air fryer!
