Family Movie Night: Never Too Far Apart
"If we listen to each other's heart, we'll find we're never too far apart."
Every millennial reading that line probably started singing the rest of the song immediately. And if you're anything like us, your kids know it by heart too.
Another family movie night is on deck, and tonight we're revisiting the classic A Goofy Movie, just in time for Father's Day. This has always been one of those movies that manages to be hilarious, heartfelt, and surprisingly relatable, no matter how old you are.
AG and I sing "I2I" at least once a week and usually end up breaking out a few dance moves while we're at it. It's become one of those little traditions that makes me smile every time.
While A Goofy Movie is packed with unforgettable songs, goofy adventures, and Powerline worthy performances, at its heart it's a story about family. Max spends most of the movie trying to pull away from his dad, while Goofy is doing everything he can to stay connected. Somewhere between the road trips, misunderstandings, and Bigfoot sightings, they both learn that even when life gets messy, the people who love us are never really that far away.
That's one of the reasons this movie feels especially fitting for Father's Day. Family isn't always defined by biology. It's built through love, consistency, and showing up day after day. Today, we're celebrating all the dads, stepdads, grandpas, and father figures who make a difference in a child's life.
As a bonus dad, Erik holds a special place in AG's story. He may not have been there from the beginning, but he's been there for dance recitals, school events, movie nights, hard conversations, and countless everyday moments that matter just as much. Being a parent isn't only about sharing DNA; it's about showing up, loving fiercely, and choosing your family every single day.
Bonus dads often don't get enough credit for the role they play, but their impact can be immeasurable. They help cheer from the sidelines, offer guidance, share inside jokes, and become a steady source of love and support. We are incredibly grateful for the bond Erik and AG have built together, and Father's Day feels like the perfect time to celebrate that special relationship.
Tonight's Menu
🍕 Goofy's Leaning Tower of Cheeza
🍕 PJ's Gooey Pepperoni Pizza
🥣 Max's "Hi Dad" Soup
🍨 Roxanne's Red Velvet Ice Cream
🥤 Powerline's Punch
For dessert, I'm sharing Roxanne's Red Velvet Ice Cream, inspired by the girl who had Max's heart from the very beginning. Creamy, chocolatey, and full of classic red velvet flavor, it's the perfect sweet ending to our Family Movie Night.
Roxanne's Red Velvet Ice Cream
Ingredients
¾ cup granulated sugar
¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
¼ teaspoon salt
1 cup whole milk
1¾ cups heavy cream
1 tablespoon red velvet extract or red food coloring
Instructions (Ice Cream Maker Method)
In a medium bowl, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, and salt.
Add the milk, heavy cream, and red velvet extract (or food coloring) and whisk until smooth and fully combined.
Cover and refrigerate for 1–2 hours, or overnight for best results.
Pour the chilled mixture into your ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Transfer to a freezer-safe container and freeze for 2–4 hours, or until firm enough to scoop.
No Ice Cream Maker? No Problem!
You can still enjoy Roxanne's Red Velvet Ice Cream without any special equipment.
Follow Steps 1–3 above to prepare and chill the mixture.
Pour the mixture into a shallow freezer-safe dish or loaf pan.
Freeze for 45 minutes.
Remove from the freezer and vigorously stir with a fork or whisk, breaking up any ice crystals.
Repeat every 30–45 minutes for about 3–4 hours, or until the ice cream reaches your desired consistency.
Freeze until firm before serving.
Shortcut No-Churn Version: If you'd rather skip the stirring, whip 2 cups of heavy cream to stiff peaks and fold it into a mixture of one 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk, the cocoa powder, and red velvet extract. Freeze for 6 hours or overnight. The texture will be slightly different but still deliciously creamy.
This homemade Red Velvet Ice Cream is the perfect sweet ending to a cheesy movie-night feast. Serve it alongside a glass of Powerline's Punch, turn up your favorite Powerline hit, and enjoy a Family Movie Night that's guaranteed to be a hit.
After all, if Max and Goofy can survive a cross-country road trip together, we can survive one more round of singing every Powerline song at the top of our lungs.
